On Getting Out of Bed

As a senior who is being treated for both Parkinson’s and depression, I often have trouble getting out of bed in the morning.  Perhaps that is why the book “On Getting Out of Bed” (by Alan Noble) grabbed my attention. I recommend it to any follower of Jesus who is struggling to get out of bed in the morning or who knows someone who has that struggle.

I rarely read books twice, but with this book I am making an exception.  Several months ago, I quit writing.  There have been many excuses.  Writing used to be easy and now it is hard.  Just like getting out of bed has become hard.

Sometimes it is good to know where a book is headed before you begin:

“If you take away one truth, the one thing in this book I know with certainty, let it be this: your life is a good gift from a loving God, even when subjectively it doesn’t feel good or like a gift, and even when you doubt that God is loving. Please get out of bed anyway.” —Alan Noble

13 For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. 14 I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. (Psalms 139:13-14 NIV)

My life is a gift from a loving God.  I was created with a purpose.  I often forget this as life’s circumstances distract me.  A part of God’s gift to me is the freedom to decide what to do with this gift of life.  Sometimes, God’s gift includes difficult circumstances.  I did not choose my gifts from God.  He is sovereign and He chooses them or permits them.  We all need grace and encouragement to get out of bed for one more day.

Recently my grandson and I took a trip together to visit the Creation Museum and Ark Encounter.  As the trip grew closer my anxiety grew.  I am very glad we did not cancel the trip.  As usual, none of my worries turned into reality.  We had a wonderful trip and both places we visited were encouragements to our faith.  It was very helpful to have a helpful traveling companion and excellent navigator.

Throughout the Old Testament there are situations where the Israelites appear to be facing an immovable obstacle.  Time after time the instructions are similar.  Someone must take the first step that demonstrates faith in God’s promise.  That’s what getting out of bed is.  It is an expression of faith that God is in control and that He will use today’s circumstances for good.  The only way that happens is if I give the day to Him and get out of bed.
