Reading Kate

Faith based films have become quite common and the quality is improving.  Most people are familiar with the Kendrick brothers and movies like Fireproof.  My favorite faith based films come from a much lesser known production company called Kelly’s Filmworks.  One of my main dislikes in the Kendrick brothers films is that point in the film when they decide to tell rather than show.  Reading Kate from Kelly’s Filmworks is an excellent example of showing rather than telling.  If Jesus was telling parables today I think he’d use movies to tell His story and they might look just like Reading Kate.

I love spectacular visuals, but when I go to the movies I want a great story told with interesting dialogue.  Words are important and too many movies focus only on the objectionable words that will get a more adult rating.  You won’t find any of this in Reading Kate.  Every word has meaning and I and even after watching the movie twice I could watch it again to catch a phrase I missed before.

We watched the movie with our small group at church last evening.  Some wondered if they were going to be able to stay awake watching a two-hour movie that is mostly a conversation between two people over a period of days.  No one fell asleep and the person who usually does said it was just too interesting.  If you want to see a movie that shows you would Biblical reconciliation looks like, then this is the movie I’d start with.
