Just For Fun

One of the things I was looking forward to in retirement was being able to read more.  The past few weeks I’ve been able to do that.  When I was much younger my wife and I both enjoyed reading books by Alistair MacLean and Dick Francis.  We loved the action and both authors were able to create fast paced stories without an abundance of sex and offensive language.  I don’t like to read books twice, so I’ve been searching for current authors whose books would provide the same kind of experience.

I just finished reading the latest series by Joel C. Rosenberg.  I had to pace myself or I wouldn’t have gotten anything done once I started reading the latest in the series.  The book opens with a bang and never slows down until the dramatic climax.  Rosenberg is an expert on the Middle East and the J.B. Collins series of novels deal with a variety of Middle Eastern issues.

There are three books in the series and it is important to read them in order to preserve the suspense:

The Third Target

The First Hostage

Without Warning

J.B. Collins, the hero of these novels, is a New York Times reporter whose skill set seems better suited for international espionage than reporting.  Rosenberg is a Christian and the hero of these books is not.  However, he is surrounded by believers and this leads to the few slower portions of the books as J.B. Collins struggles with faith.  Be aware that Rosenberg has very strong feelings on U.S. foreign policy and your won’t have any doubt regarding his opinions when you’ve finished the books.  Regardless, if you’re looking for a clean diversion and enjoy the action adventure genre I think you’ll love these books.
