Intentionality – Proverbs 4

The beginning of wisdom is this: Get wisdom. Though it cost all you have, get understanding. Cherish her, and she will exalt you; embrace her, and she will honor you. (Proverbs 4:7-8 NIV)

What do we want, really want? If someone followed us around for a week what would they see as our pursuits? For most of us, there are many things we want and many things we pursue. Most of the time these are determined by our circumstances. We say we want control over our lives, but the truth is that much of the time we wander through life driven by things we have no control over.

Solomon knows something about wisdom. Wisdom is priceless and only comes through intentionally focused pursuit. Note what Jesus has to say about this.

But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it. (Matthew 7:14 NIV)

We must want wisdom and then pursue it. I’ve been distracted by physical issues for the past several weeks and for the first time in a long time my morning quiet time routine has totally fallen apart. I had decided to read and blog through Proverbs and then quickly discovered that the first few chapters are repetitive. What could I write that wasn’t already clear in what Solomon had written?

We don’t need more words, instead, we need to get wisdom from the words that have already been written and then follow where wisdom leads.

For my grandchildren:

Listen to your parents and get all the wisdom you can from them. Read the gospels and get wisdom from Jesus.
