Opportunity

“Opportunity knocks only once. You never know if you’ll get another opportunity.” Leon Spinks

I remember Leon Spinks.  He was one of the lesser known heavyweight boxers.  I would never have attributed this quote to him, but that’s what I found in Google.

I don’t know if the opportunity we had Sunday morning will ever repeat itself, but there was a lesson in it.  Out for our regular Sunday morning walk on the beach we went to look at the tide pools.  It was low tide and there were very few footprints of any kind in the sand.  When we got to the tide pools we noticed something was swimming in one of the pools.  As we stood quietly we discovered that two sea otters were feeding there.  After a short time, they climbed out of the water onto the rocks and stayed there grooming and playing for some time.

Low Tide Without Otters

This is where the opportunity thing comes in.  I have a picture of where the otters were, but I have no pictures of the otters.  My camera was in the car.  Given the amount of time the otters played on the rocks there was ample opportunity to walk back, get the camera, and get some good pictures.  I didn’t.  Instead, I had a whim and we went back to the same spot at low tide the next morning hoping that the otters would return.  They didn’t.

We may see them again someday.  It does appear that they are living in that area of the beach.  On all our future walks, I’ll take the camera with me.  I don’t want to miss another opportunity.
