Angels – Hebrews 1

How many different ways can you say that Jesus is God without directly saying that Jesus is God? The writer of Hebrews uses Old Testament prophecy to make the point that Jesus is God. In the process he or she tells us a little about angels. They are created, like us, but have a unique role in creation. I could go off and do an in depth study of angels, but what would be the point.

Therefore, angels are only servants– spirits sent to care for people who will inherit salvation. (Hebrews 1:14 NLT)

Jesus is the reigning king and angels are servants created to care for the subjects of the king. I need caring for. It is too easy to forget that this world is temporary and that the real and eternal are unseen. Does anyone remember the Frank Peretti books: This Present Darkness and Piercing the Darkness. Peretti wrote fiction and he made angels visible. They were powerful and necessary because the enemy was almost as powerful and very real. While there is no way to know if Peretti was anywhere close to capturing the truth I think his reminder about the importance of angels and the reality of spiritual warfare were helpful.

I think that the writer of Hebrews wants me to know that even though angels are fascinating and important, they are minor players in the story. Jesus is the one who matters. I shouldn’t forget about angels, but my focus should be on Jesus.
